Step into the open ocean with Tierney Thys
Marine biologist Tierney Thys asks the audience to step into the open ocean for a visit to the world of the Mola mola, or giant ocean sunfish. Basking, eating jellyfish, and getting massages, this behemoth offers clues to life in the open ocean -- which accounts for 90 percent of the living space on this planet -- and also shows how climate change may be affecting all life. (Recorded February 2003 in Monterey, CA. Duration: 16:53) Read Tierney Thys's profile on TED.com

I know this sounds silly, but I was a bit suprised when Tirney talked about eating Mola mola (gaint ocean sunfish)in Japan. Not that it makes any measureable difference in their population, but as a biologist and career ecologist I think that most of us realize that eating meat is one of the causes of the the present conditions that concern us, i.e., overfishing, reef decline, deforestation, water/air pollution and the list goes on. If TED is be the intellectual beacon and spear point to revolutionary change (natural and progressive change), I feel that we need to continue to target the cardinal human values and delve into deeper understanding of human conduct and how it impacts everything.
