A bold plan for mass adoption of electric cars: Shai Agassi on TED.com

Forget about the hybrid auto — Shai Agassi says it’s electric cars or bust if we want to impact emissions. His company, Better Place, has a radical plan to take entire countries oil-free by 2020. (Recorded at TED2009, February 2009, in Long Beach, California. Duration: 18:06.)

    I have two questions.

    1. Can the revised electric car designs take advantage of the turbines (similar to those designed by Metaefficient) to recharge the battery? a 55 MPH or even a 20 MPH car ride generates enough air movement to at a very minimum increase the duration of the drive. There could also be two batteries just like dual hard drives on a computer. The combination of the two batteries are equal to the one (thus the size issue is more resolved) and the battery that is not being used at that time can be recharged by the air movement.

2, In areas like the north east we have an inadequately sized power grid that can not handle the current electrical load to the point where entire neighborhoods receive less electricity to ensure the system as a whole does not melt down. There are multiple questions that create multiple opportunities within this issue:
    1. can the car become more self sufficient through creative design – thus will not rely on a grid that is currently coal or oil fed? If not society will have to agree that even more reduction of the power supplied to their homes during peak usage is worth the benefit. I would, but am sure that those living around me would not.
    2. A significant change must be made to the power grid. stimulus money that would allow individuals to install solar on the roof of their home that would reverse meter into the system may be more realistic than creating new power plants. The companies are here and the home owners are willing. Now the government needs to make more of an investment to make this a reality.
