TEDster Maria Eitel nominated by President Obama as National Service CEO

Just hours ago, President Barack Obama announced his intention to nominate TEDster Maria Eitel to the position of CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. She would head the organization that supports programs such as Americorps, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve America.
President Obama had this to say about his decision:
“Maria is genuinely passionate about the role of national and community service as a vehicle for engaging and mobilizing citizens in social change, and will bring new, creative thinking to the growth and mission of the Corporation.”
Maria is the founding and current president of the Nike Foundation, which is principally invested in The Girl Effect, a compelling effort to improve opportunities for young women in developing countries and in poverty. She has also been a TED attendee for the past four years running.
Here at TED, we’d like to congratulate Maria on this well-deserved and hard-earned honor, and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

Apr 27 2009What a wonderful honor! You will certainly rise to the occasion. Mandatory Community service for all children in schools is a good idea. It changed my life.
Kindest Regards
