Announcing TED's Global Conversation Project

ConvoProjectScreengrab.jpg

This morning at TEDGlobal 2010, our executive producer of TED Media, June Cohen, gave a sneak peek of the Global Conversation Project. Sponsored by GE, this development will let our TED.com users start and find a conversation in any language, to develop a truly worldwide conversation surrounding TEDTalks. Even more, the upcoming project will allow TED.com users to start and join conversations on any topic — beyond making comments on a particular talk or theme, you’ll be able to ask questions, pitch projects, wax philosophical in a freeform, multilingual conversation. Expect to see it live on-site this fall!

This looks like a really neat feature! But I wonder how many people are actually posting comments in languages other than English right now. Maybe this feature will help promote the use of other languages. At the same time, I hope this feature will not lead to any kind of self-segregation. After all, TED focuses on communication between different cultures, not just self-talk within each individual culture.

    My two suggestions:
    1. Maybe TED could add an auto-translate feature to the comment section, so that a person speaking e.g. Chinese can also understand what people speaking other languages are talking about, and vice versa.

    2. Also although Open Translation Program has been in place for more than a year, on the page of any translated talk video, the only parts in the translated language are the talk title and the talk introduction. The comment section, in particular, is still the same across different language versions of the talk. Maybe after this feature is introduced, comments in the translated language can be promoted to the top of the comment thread? So for example, if a person speaking Spanish comes to watch a talk in Spanish, the first few comments he reads will be those posted in Spanish.

It would be nicer if the whole site interface were translatable. So people that don’t know English could browse easily, at least using the menu links etc.
