How pig parts make the world turn: Christien Meindertsma on TED.com

Christien Meindertsma, author of “Pig 05049″ looks at the astonishing afterlife of the ordinary pig, parts of which make their way into at least 187 non-pork products, from bullets to artificial hearts. (Recorded at TEDGlobal, July 2010 in Oxford, England. Duration: 8:54)

Really interesting! But… what is the speech aimed at? I mean, before I came across this speech I thought TED is about ideas worth spreading… so the idea was…? Just help me understand how my knowing about pig’s hair in my bread will change the world for better?

I think the idea is to familiarize people with the everyday objects they use and consume. If for religious or medical reasons, for example, one wants to avoid eating pig meat, then having a steak like described here would be undesirable. Also, spreading awareness about the practices of the animal industry. Like Ms. Meindertsma says in the introduction, many people are significantly removed from the things they eat. So this is the idea of perhaps finding out what you’re actually eating. Which I think is a very good idea, since diet is a key component in every person’s life.

Also, she succinctly says her point and the idea worth sharing (better than I wrote) in her last sentence.
