They’ve been called the “saints of Somalia.” Doctor Hawa Abdi and her daughter Deqo Mohamed discuss their medical clinic in Somalia, where — in the face of civil war and open oppression of women — they’ve built a hospital, a school and a community of peace.(Recorded at TEDWomen, December 2010, in Washington, DC. I used to live in Somalia when i was a child and my father was posted there by the government on an assignment. I remember Somalia before the civil war and it was the most wonderful place ever. We used to live in Hargeisa, the house was atop a hill. I remember our neighbours Amina, Kalthun, Abdi and many others. It was safe for women and children to walk out to town in the night. I remember attending weddings, men chewing on khaat(?) , anno (donkey milk), i can still count upto ten in Somali.
I wish the war had never happened. It pains me to think about it. I really wish one day I would return there to see the once peaceful land, see the market place, see pretty children with curly hair, tugging at our hair to see if its a wig, and once more buy “Kinky Dan” chewing gum.

its overwhelming to know that other people than Somalis, have known the better days of Somalia, been there and loved it, and do really know that the current situation of our country is not the ever lasting , and that we had better days. and hopefully the future will be better.
i would just make a correction on your comment kavitha robert, caano (Somali) or anno (english) is the milk of a camel not a donkey :-) am not really sure if donkeys r even milked lol …
