Listening (and speaking) IS taught in primary school – and i think secondary – in the UK. It is a crucial part of literacy, as listening is how we learn language. Unfortunately pressure to achieve grades on writing and maths mean the crucial skills of communication are often squeezed out. Teaching a lesson on listening for 30 kids is harder (and noisier!) than giving them a workshop on grammar. But it is also much more fun!
