Wow.... what serendipity!! Just now stumbled upon this as I was attempting to find another speaker's talk (which I did: John Francis Walks the Earth). A dear old friend of mine is a long-time technophobe and extreme latecomer to the Internet, so I'm easing her in with some of the lovely gentle talks one can find on TED.com.

Anyway, suddenly I saw the link to your recent interview, and opened it. Enjoyed your thoughts very much, especially the piece about sticking around to connect with others, no matter what your initial impressions based on enculturation. And that the only way we're gonna dismantle racism is person-to-person. That's happening now in the world, slowly but surely. How many more generations will it take?

Reminds me of Bernice Johnson Reagon a generation ago, generating that "little barred room" meme about our attachments to community, and instructing us to link up with the folks who are always running from one room to another instead of staying put in their identity zones. Or, as she put it most succinctly, "There is nowhere you can go and only be with people who are like you. Give it up."

Here's to opposable thumbs, and curiosity....

Which reminds me (on an extremely silly sidenote), do google "cats with thumbs" when you have 60 seconds. It's not TED.com but it *is* brilliant -- featuring CGI, The Art of War, and Tim Curry's voice -- need I say more?

(Let's just hope that real cats would be more conducive to your method of crossing the interspecies divide.... :~)

Let me also add that I was SO captivated and inspired by Bryan Stevenson's TED2012 talk. Was overjoyed that the audience at TED were moved to a standing O. Been reflecting on that that video has only been viewed by over 300K and that phony Kony video by over 100 million in about the same time period. What's wrong with these numbers!!

Thanks to all sharing this interview on Twitter and FB!! If you are in NYC, I am performing in collaboration with an Indian choreographer, Preeti Vasudevan, on a masterful piece we've been creating for 3 years that has a traditional indian story (Savitri and Satyvan) at its core but that has me merging South Indian singing with my roots in African-American vocal traditions from soul, blues, Baptist singing, jazz and my classical training, 12 yrs of Western classical voice.
