Just two cents from a regular guy. I'm the type who is not great at retaining information from topics that I REALLY REALLY am NOT interested in. On the other hand, I know everything in topics that I love like the back of my hand. Thinking back to my childhood days, the times that I learned the most from school are those few moments where I dive deep into a topic for a project that I worked on with other classmates. My favorite parts were demonstrating our critical thinking based on the information we found and what we observed in the real world. The reason was simple: it was my moment, where I got to show the world my creativity. So basically, I'm dumbfounded as to why we still spend 80% of our time in K12 listening, copying stuff from the blackboard (that I could've gotten off Google or all the online ed resources today), and dreading the bell. I'm almost thirty so may be the classroom experience have gotten better, but I still feel that our entire system doesn't emphasize enough on critical thinking and real-world learning.

The transaction cost is exactly the problem. Most kids don't voluntarily hang out at the library unless they were forced too. Even if they did they'd need an adult with them (for the younger ones), and it's a hassle to physical transport yourself. Even for adults today, we'd get irritated just waiting for a Youtube video to load...imagine that for kids.
