There's no doubt that our society must step up on behalf of the world's orphans if we are to be make a difference in the lives of children. Unfortunately, though, it's not possible to empty the orphanages ... because not every orphan is adoptable.

My husband and I work with Hope Unlimited for Children (www.hopeunlimited.org) Due to the realities of their young lives, children in our residential homes in Brazil are not adoptable ... but that doesn't stop God from working miracles of healing and transformation in their lives!

To understand why adoption isn't possible, I hope you'll read this post I just published on my blog: http://myplacetoyours.blogspot.com/2012/10/day-29-of-31-days-of-creative-caring.html

It would be correct to post “some” or “most” orphanages fitting her description. I was raised in 4 orphanages and I came out OK. To this day my discards always go to the Salvation Army. I owe my life to Capitaine Riom of the French Salvation army and finding remnants of my family. I can’t accept her generalizations. Efforts should go to better all orphanages.

Yes, it’s dreary but to a large extent, it is a matter of design and the level of child desperation.

I have participated in the setting up of the Nyumbani Village, Kitui, Kenya (www.nyumbani.org) with 1,000 orphans and 125 elders and I think it is different from the description given.

More of these are needed though a scheme is on to encourage, socio-economically, fostering.

Let’s talk

So you visited a terrible orphanage and make generalizations such as 10 time more likely to be involved in prostitution or 40% more likely to be involved in crime. I was hidden in an orphanage of the Salvation Army during WW II my parents unbeknown to me already murdered. After the war I grew up in different Jewish orphanages. I have never been involved in crime or prostitution. Who writes such non-sense?
