great in theory - so let's home school everybody right ?

until you look at taxpayer funding - and parents demanding accountability for their tax dollars - e.g. homework - even when teachers feel it's not necessary, parents often push for homework as visible evidence of their child's performance.

the last time I looked, education was up there with healthcare as one of the largest costs to government, i.e. billions of dollars - and with that come a whole lot of demands from the millions of stakeholders both public and private - thus the continuous ferment of demands for improvement.

The major cost to government of education is huge and relatively fixed - improvements tend to be minor and around the edges.

So - easy call to say let's get rid of formal education - but while your parents are both working and don't want to pay $200 a day for childcare - I'll guess underage kids will continue to be expected to go to school. Learning not just STEM subjects, but how to play well with others. Important skills for the rest of your life.
