10 amazing comments from renegade gardener Ron Finley

Posted by: Thu-Huong Ha

Ron Finley, the self-described renegade gardener, gave a hit talk at TED2013 on his gardening efforts all over South Central LA. Finley is an object of my fascination for more than one reason: In the 35 days since Finley’s talk went live, he’s left 178 comments on the site, making him the 3rd most prolific speaker commenter. (Trivia: the 1st and 2nd are Curator Chris Anderson and TED2011 speaker Janet Echelman.) To put it in context, as someone who receives speaker comments in a daily digest sent to me by email: Of the 1,250 speakers on the site, only 211 have left comments, and the average number of comments they’ve left is 19.

Here are my 10 favorite comments left by Ron Finley on TED.com — with just a touch of context, since that’s how I receive them in my inbox. Click on the link to see the full discussion going on in the thread:

The points made and the approach taken are so obvious to anyone who has ever grown something. There is an Eden waiting to grow if we will let it. Go check some seeds out of the library and get your asses to work. Everyone should be growing their own food. It is CRAZY that we don’t grow our own healthy, cheap, good, fun, beautiful food. CRAZY! Good job. East Palo ALto shout out! Joe

Love it!! Way to win the fight. I just started my own herbal “garden” as an experiment before I go deeper into growing other items, was just wondering what you do for pest control?

This is one of the most inspiring talks I think I have ever run across on TED. I just recently found out about and have volunteered for a local community garden in my area. They have been struggling for a couple of years to get this thing going in a substantial way, and I am looking forward to participating in the project. Ron’s efforts are a model that can be implemented anywhere there is an empty space, large or small, which is going unused. All I can say is, Ron Finley is my hero. This video simply left me awestruck.
