When more than 300 people gathered on Sunday, February 24th, at the Merv Griffin estate for the fourth annual TEDx Workshop at TEDActive, TEDx Director Lara Stein took a look back at the program’s amazing 2012 milestones — the TEDxSummit gathering in Doha, over 5,000 TEDx events and 20+0 TEDx Talks on TED.com. She also looked forward with a global community that has quickly grown “from baby to toddler.”

The day was marked with presentations from TED staff and TEDx organizers, and updates on community-initiated projects. X’ers then broke out into brainstorm sessions, spread throughout the estate.

As the program grows, its members are increasingly global — TEDx attendees of TEDActive alone came from 63 countries — but continues to stay connected through workshops at TED conferences, local gatherings and online groups.

“You are a living, breathing, ecosystem … In order to be successful as a global community, we need to be better at getting together,” said Lara Stein, as she addressed the crowd from stage at the start of the day. “Your ability to get together will have a great impact on your TEDx community.”

Of course, as TEDx’ers, meeting in a conference room simply won’t do. As one attendee @CharlieCurve tweeted: “Out: Conference Rooms. In: Conferences Without Rooms.”

At the TEDx Workshop on Sunday, June 24, at TEDGlobal 2012, six TEDx organizers took the stage to address the best practices and lessons learned from organizing a TEDx event:

Photo: Bret Hartman

Everything is not a democracy, say no when you need to, says Dave Troy of TEDxMidAtlantic, who spoke on creating a resilient TEDx event by building a great team. Key takeaways? Don’t be a dictator. Believe in your team. Give credit.

Photo: Bret Hartman

Phil Klein of TEDxRainier spoke to Team challenges with one of the best quotes of the day: “No event has overestimated their work and said, ‘Oh, it takes a lot less than we thought it did!’”

Photo: Bret Hartman

Stemming from a workshop that he did at TEDxSummit, Dimitris Kalavros-Gousiou of TEDxAthens presented on social media, which he calls the very best way to get and stay in touch with your tribe. Always be telling stories, he said, especially about speakers, so that when your event comes, your speaker will be more than ‘that guy’, he will be a hero.

Photo: Bret Hartman

Martin Noorkoiv of TEDxTartu (that’s in Estonia!) addressed what he believes is the key to approaching sponsors for your TEDx event — don’t try to sell companies details, sell them the ‘why’ of your event: the big picture, the vision, the reason you are doing this. “Our job is to get to the human part of every organization, get them to feel, getting them feel special about working with you on this powerful thing you are doing,” he says.

Photo: Bret Hartman

Saad Hamid of TEDxMargalla spoke to the importance of creating a diverse audience for a TEDx event. When attendees are filling out the form to attend their Saad and his team take into consideration diversity of the age of attendees, and their occupation, but also by the diversity of their ‘Blab’: if they are a Blabber, achiever or believer.

Photo: Bret Hartman

Jeremy Derfner, representing TEDxChange, and the Senior Communications Officer/Chief Speechwriter at the Gates Foundation spoke on calls to action — what specific actions can TEDx communities take to have an impact?

Videos from TEDx presentations at TEDGlobal will go live on the TEDx channel. In the meantime, check out other great presentations from past conferences »>

Sneak peek: Quixotic rehearsals at TED2012: Full Spectrum. February 27 – March 2, 2012. Long Beach, CA. Photo: James Duncan Davidson

Cross-posted from the TEDx Tumblr:

Kansas City-based dance troupe Quixotic Fusion performed at TEDxKC 2010 and 2011 before finding their way to the TED2012 stage (you can watch that performance on TED.com). During the conference, the TEDx Tumblr asked TEDxKC organizer Mike Lundgren how he found the out-of-this-world dance troupe, and what they were feeling after their performance:

How did you find Quixotic?

Quixotic is emblematic of Kansas City’s surge in arts and technology — they were “starving artists” with a penchant for performances on a grand scale when I first met them. They typically plowed whatever money they made from one event into even grander events to follow, including an ambitious project that had them dangling like sexy Spider-men (and -women) atop Kansas City’s Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Truthfully, it took little effort to convince Quixotic they were perfect for TEDx, and they brought the house down with their first TEDxKC performance in 2010. In an encore performance the following year they hacked an Xbox Kinect so a dancer could directly control music, animation and interaction — dimensionalizing Technology, Entertainment and Design and illuminating their path to the TED mainstage.

What was the reaction to their performance at your event?

One email I received from an audience member said: “Even as an experienced Quixotic fan, watching the simulcast from Quixotic’s hometown, we all had goosebumps from awe and pride throughout the four vignettes. Every time they perform, they ratchet up the performance another level. When it was all over we sat in stunned silence for several moments before we looked at each other and cheered.”

You’ve been speaking to the dancers a bit — what are they feeling right now?

I think when you toil at your craft for so long, and then one day your idols approach you to say how mesmerized and in awe they were by your performance — how can you help but not breathe that in and feel satisfied that you have shared something special? No question the troupe is in as much awe of the TED community as we feel towards them.
