Instead of simply coloring with crayons, imagine a drawing session with special paper and pens that let you create light-up circuits out of doodles. Or instead of old-fashioned construction paper cut-outs, creating a pop-up book with working lights.

In this talk from TEDYouth 2011, electrical engineer Leah Buechley describes how she and her team at the MIT Media Lab often feel bored by the slow, expensive process of designing circuit boards, that almost always come out looking the same. Their idea? To make designing electronics more like child’s play. In this talk, Buechley shares two projects that make this concept a reality, showing how drawn squiggles can be connected into a playable musical instrument, and how a cut-out cityscape can glow and twinkle like a real skyline.

To see demonstrations of these projects, watch this exciting talk. And after the jump, view three more talks from those who’ve aimed to make electronic design lots more fun.

May these talks inspire you not to miss TEDYouth this coming Saturday, November 17, where Carl Zimmer will reveal a parasite that turns cockroaches into zombies, NASA flight director Bobak Ferdowsi will share how he got a two ton machine to Mars and Jay-Z’s music producer, Young Guru, will talk about the future of hip hop. Even if you aren’t registered for the conference, you can still take part in the fun as the event will be fully livestreamed in English, Spanish and Arabic. (Sign up for a livestream reminder notification here.) At the same time, more than 100 TEDxYouthDay events will be taking place in 42 countries around the globe this weekend. View those events, as well as the 26 of them that will be livestreaming, through the TEDxYouthDay website >>

Ayah Bdeir: Building blocks that blink, beep and teach
TED Fellow Ayah Bdeir introduced us to the next generation of LEGOs at TED2012. Called littleBits, these interchangeable blocks contain transistors that let kids build projects that buzz, blink, dim, pulse and sense — all while learning about programming at the same time.

On November 13 — just a weeks after Hurricane Sandy left downtown Manhattan without electricity — Bdeir held a workshop called “Why did the lights go out?” There, kids were invited to create light-up models of New York City. Bdeir tells the TED Blog, “LittleBits’ mission is to make people understand electronics and electricity in a world that is governed by it. For us, the hurricane was a reminder of how dependent we are on electrical systems, and how little most of us understand how they work. In the workshop we demonstrated how electricity connects to our everyday life — in both simple and extremely dramatic ways — and why Sandy made us lose power.“

Kate Hartman: The art of wearable communication
Kate Hartman is both an artist and technologist, and her projects explore the bounds of human communication. What does that mean, exactly? Well, she’s created a hat that lets the wearer talk to themselves and an inflatable heart that shows the outside world what the wearer is feeling inside.

Neil Harbisson: I listen to color
Artist Neil Harbisson wears an electronic eye. Born with a visual condition called achromatopsia, which only lets him see shades of grey, this eye converts the colors of the world into sounds, allowing him to hear them. In this talk from TEDGlobal 2012, Harbisson explains how this piece of electronic equipment has made going to the supermarket like strolling through a nightclub.

At TED, we’re constantly impressed by the accomplishments of young innovators. With talks like Adora Svitak’s “What adults can learn from kids,” 12-year-old Amy O’Toole assisting Beau Lotto in “Science is for everyone: kids included,” and Thomas Suarez, who was developing apps before he could drive, we can’t help but be hopeful for the future. That is why we are thrilled to announce the third anniversary of TEDxYouthDay, a series of independently-organized TEDx events designed to empower and inspire teens and kids worldwide.

This Saturday and Sunday more than 100 TEDx events will participate in TEDxYouthDay, with youth conferences going down in 42 countries — including Egypt, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Brazil, Taiwan and the United States. A whopping 26 of these TEDxYouthDay events will be livestreamed through the TEDxYouthDay website. Additionally, more than 100 youth leaders — some as young as 11-years-old – have volunteered to report on these events, and will be writing, photographing and tweeting from events across the globe. You can follow their reporting on Twitter live on the 17th and 18th by following the hashtag #TEDxYouth.

TED will also be participating in the fun with TEDYouth in New York City, a free, day-long event for high school students.
This year’s TEDxYouthDay theme is “Dream Big…Then Do It!” For the past month, youth from around the world have been sharing their big ideas for a better world. Here, some selections from the TEDxYouthDay photo campaign, for which young people completed the sentence, “A dream that I commit to making real is…” The breadth, depth, and creativity of these answers have astonished us — like the answer above from Instagram user shenjustshen – and we can’t wait to see what these dreamers will accomplish.

As we approach TEDxYouthDay alongside our very first TEDYouth event, we’re curious to hear what you have to say about all things youth-related. Each week until the last day of TEDxYouthDay, a youth-related question will be asked on TED Conversations. We invite you to sign up or log-in using your TED.com account and jump in the Conversation!

This week’s youth-related question is, “Do you have a story about when a young person first watched a TEDTalk or TEDxTalk? What happened?“

I certainly remember what happened when I first watched a TEDTalk. A friend had sent me a link to Sir Ken Robinson’s talk on how schools kill creativity. I was simply amazed that this professor who works in a prestigious academic institution was giving a talk on things that I never imagined anyone in education would have the guts to say…publicly!

I wrote in my journal all the thoughts it had inspired in me and the solutions I would love to try. I then sent the video to 10 of my friends from college and high school via Facebook. I was 19 or 20 at the time. Now, I’m 23 and I still remember how watching Sir Ken Robinson’s talk made my brain explode with inspiration and a new sense of awareness about the world around me.

What about you?

If you missed our previous youth-related Conversations in honor of TEDxYouthDay, we invite you to take a look at what others had to say. Here’s a quick recap of the Conversations started and comments we received:

Week 1: What is the single most important question that the youth of this era need to ask themselves?

Nanjira Sambuli:
We need to ask ourselves, especially youth in Africa, who are ever on a crossroads between the old and new school of thought,(what Prof. Ayittey refers to as the hippo vs cheetah generation…http://goo.gl/Dvg7p) whether through our words/silence, actions/inactions we are part of the problem or the solution.

Harold Saxon:
Where are we going? I feel like a lot of my peers are just sort of living without thinking about the future and I think we could really benefit from some… direction, I guess.

Simone Lackerbauer:
“How can I make a change with the technical and communicational possibilities I have today which my grandparents did not have fifty years ago?” — New media, innovative communication technologies, virtual platforms for debates: we take all these things for granted, spend hours on polishing our Facebook profiles, but forget to ask how we could make use of them for the future of humanity.

Week 2: What does it take to make the youth take charge and feel responsible for their own initiatives?

Matt Lane
Integrate community decision making (town halls, local businesses, and schooling programs) processes into the daily activities of our lives.

Ginger Tetreault
I think its rare to have found what you’re passionate about in life as a youth. Many are not taught to recognize it. We often learn to base our decisions on the wrong reasoning such as greed, status and the like but not the value of honoring and following that which we are most passionate.

So you ask, What does it take? I believe it takes teaching youth to recognize their true path in life where they will excel because they have been naturally drawn to an initiative which matches how they work most effortlessly and that which holds their interest. I think we would all agree that it has become a challenge to ‘hold the interest’ of today’s youth brought up in an electronic era where the internet delivers answers instantly, food can be ordered and received in ‘minutes’ and technology more efficient as each year passes. This era has also bred impatience.

If youth could more frequently see the result and consequences of their actions it would truly resonate with them. If they could see the bigger picture they would see another person their age, somewhere else in the world ‘dreaming’ of having the same opportunity as they have in their hands.

Week 3: What have you learned from a young person recently?

Debra Smith
I have a 20 year old daughter who grew up with four brothers. She understands men far better than I do and I learn a lot from her about being a modern woman.

Chandramouli Dorai
I’m just back from my walking. I saw a 6 year old kid giving small trees to every one on the road. I just went to him and asked why he is giving that to all? He said its his birthday. After speaking with him I have also decided to celebrate my birthday in this way.

What conversation would you have with the youth on TEDxYouthDay? Start it today on TED Conversations.

In preparation for TEDxYouthDay, we started a TED Conversation that asks:

What is the single most important question that the youth of this era need to ask themselves?

We RT’ed it on @TEDNewsand here are some of the great replies that came in:

@MrOliThomas: what can I do?…

@BGrufferman: How can I help get the Equal Rights Amendment passed once and for all?

@Mikeriddell62: Why didn’t I act?

@Jonwizard: Why am I apathetic about my government, how does that affect both society and me, and what can I do to change and participate?

@Bloggertom: Deal or No Deal?

@Teewhyare: How much can we grow?

Plus! Jim Stolze from TEDxAmsterdam collaborated with Morley (who is also performing at TEDWomen!) to create this TEDxYouthDay song and music video “We Will Change Everything.” The video was crowdsourced from footage sent in from the TED and TEDx community. Watch above — or watch at a local TEDxYouthDay event.
