Maldives%20Update.jpgThis weekend in the Maldives, president Mohamed Nasheed made a splash when he held the world’s first underwater national cabinet meeting — a stratagem that foreshadows reality for the low-lying islands if climate change continues. By 2100, the UN predicts sea levels will rise up to 58 centimeters, a level that would literally sink the Maldives.

So, amidst bubbles and tropical fish, the president and his ministers signed an SOS message calling for the reduction of CO2 levels in the atmosphere, which will be presented at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The Maldives are symbolically important, remarked Nasheed; if the Maldives can’t be saved, there isn’t much hope for the rest of the world.
