Senior web developer, TED.com

TED.com is looking for a senior web developer to join our small, collaborative team. Our ideal candidate has significant experience working with online video, content-management systems and/or social media, plus a genuine excitement about enabling intelligent leading-edge content. Strong organization skills are assumed. Great communication skills very useful. A broad interest in the world — including science/technology, design/architecture, global development, entertainment/arts — is a big plus.

You should have:

– 5+ years web development experience.
– Expertise in object-oriented PHP and MySQL. Special consideration given to candidates with experience using the Symfony framework.
– Expertise in utilizing HTML, Javascript, CSS, and AJAX to create rich, responsive and intuitive interfaces.
– Experience in creating applications utilizing Flex/Flash/ActionScript 3 is a plus.
– Ability to work with end users to solicit requirements and manage projects.
– Familiarity with source-code control systems like Subversion.

This is a full-time position with a competitive benefit package. We’ll consider candidates who are New York-based and would work out of TED’s downtown New York office, as well as those who would work remotely. We’d like you to start yesterday.

Image Production Specialist, TED.com

TED.com is an award-winning website with several million users each month who visit us to stream, download and share our video content, featuring inspired presentations from the world’s leading thinkers and doers. The site’s high production values extend to our best-of-class video player, encoding techniques and photography. We are rapidly expanding the scope of our work, and are looking for an image production specialist who will help with the day-to-day work of managing our photo archive, preparing images for video and the web, and taking on other design-related tasks as they arise.

Responsibilities will include:
+ Managing our extensive archive of images including curating, categorizing, and tagging images
+ Selecting & prepping 10+ images a week for publication on the web, including retouching and placing text
+ Rapid fulfillment of internal and external image requests
+ Designing, building and managing slide decks
+ Rapid development of comps for site and sponsorship needs
+ Sourcing stock photos and working with our consulting photo editor
+ Other presentation and production design tasks as required

The ideal candidate has an excellent visual eye, and is very comfortable working with digital photography.

Specific skills  should include:
+ Expertise in Photoshop CS2 or later, including Photoshop's type and design tools
+ Comfort with digital asset management applications such as Photo Mechanic, Aperture or Lightroom.
+ Fluency in Powerpoint and Keynote
+ Ease in an Apple/Macintosh computing environment
+ Understanding of image rights and Creative Commons licensing

Any experience with the following a big plus:
+ Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress
+ Proprietary content management systems
+ Moving media across local and remote networks
+ Basic knowledge of print pre-press

The ideal candidate also has experience working with video, a genuine excitement about working with new technologies, and interest in intelligent leading-edge content. Strong organization and project management skills are assumed. A broad interest in the world — including science/technology, design/architecture, entertainment and the arts — is a very big plus.

This is a full-time position based in TED’s downtown New York office. Role will begin as a 3-month contract position, with possibility of full-time position with benefits.
