TEDActive-Main

TEDActive is like attending TED, only without having to sit in an auditorium for hours at a time. TEDActive attendees get to watch the talks from TED2013 while lounging around the La Quinta Resort and Spa in Palm Springs — and they also get take part in smile-inducing participatory art projects and go on all kinds of field trips for adults. (Check out the 10 coolest things that have happened at TEDActive.)

Another regular feature of TEDActive? S’more-making. Here, six people who will be around the TEDActive campfire this year.

Active-Stefan-WeitzMeet Stefan Weitz…

What problem are you trying to solve?
Transforming how systems can enable humans to deal with the massive amounts of data being thrown at them daily.

What’s your favorite thing about TEDActive?
The cabanas by the pool where you can watch the talks outdoors!

What piece of advice would you give to someone coming to TEDActive for the first time?
Embrace the serendipity — you will be amazed how much you might have in common with the person sitting next to you at lunch.

What problem are you trying to solve?
How to make new communities with memory and prophecy. Create instant connections and places that feel old when they are brand new. How to create communities with diversity — of age, income, and all the good things that Jane Jacobs pointed out about New York in the 1960s.

What’s your favorite thing about TEDActive?
Youth. Bright Minds. Sunshine.

What piece of advice would you give to someone coming to TEDActive for the first time?
Come open-hearted, rested, and ready to drink from a fire hydrant for the next week. There are no rules or dress codes or secret handshakes. EVERYONE will welcome you.

Exploring internal landscapes. Trail running & backpacking. Seeing beauty in everything. Participating in shaping organizational culture. Seizing the moment to create a spontaneously delightful experience for unsuspecting folks.

What’s your favorite thing about TEDActive?
The culture of openness. It’s a very fluid environment where anything goes.

What’s one thing you can’t live without?
Laughter! And maybe Fuyu persimmons.

Where is your favorite place on earth?
Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It is a small nature reserve island that you can walk around in just 20 minutes. I have been there twice, once when the giant turtles were burying their eggs, and once when the giant turtles were hatching! It is an isolated, magical place where you can swim with the turtles.

What problem are you trying to solve?
I would like to use digital tools (that are contributing to making our population less active, less fit and less healthy) to be part of the solution in making our population MORE active, more fit and more healthy.

What’s your favorite thing about TEDActive?
I love the opportunity to hear about ideas worth spreading in an environment that is informal, interactive, social, digitally connected, a bit hip and slightly funky. It provides an environment that is both perfect for listening and learning, but also for amplifying my own creative thinking and helping me to step outside of my day-to-day comfort zone.
